Concluding Remarks

We have presented a general architecture for autonomous agents that integrates behavior-based architectures with traditional architectures for symbolic systems. The architecture specifies how an agent establishes and maintains a conscious connection with its environment while mostly unconsciously processing sensory data, and filtering information for conscious processing as well as for reflexive and reactive acting. We ended our paper by instantiating the architecture with several (physical and simulated) agents embedded in their environment, in various stages of implementation. We believe our work can contribute towards integrating traditional ungrounded symbol systems with the newer physically grounded systems. Combining an elephant's body with a man's mind makes for an awesome combination.
